Wavelength co-presents the Saturday night of the Music Gallery’s X Avant Festival, with a concert featuring one of today’s most highly regarded American experimental musicians – one whose last name is likely familiar to adventurous music audiences – atop a bill of extreme sonic variety:

Tyondai Braxton (son of Anthony) has been active since the mid-90s. He is the former front man of experimental rock band Battles, whose debut album Mirrored was both a critical and commercial success. Since departing Battles in 2010, Braxton has focused on composing music for HIVE, as well as composing commissioned pieces for ensembles such as The Bang on a Can All Stars, Philip Glass, Kronos Quartet, Alarm Will Sound, and Brooklyn Rider. He has also performed his orchestral work Central Market with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, London Sinfonietta, BBC Symphony Orchestra, and New York’s Wordless Music Orchestra. Tyondai released HIVE1 (Nonesuch Records) earlier this year, and will be performing pieces from it featuring modular synthesizer and samples enhanced by visual accompaniment of his own design.

New Chance is the musical project of multidisciplinary Toronto artist, Victoria Cheong. Using sampler, sequencers, loops, effects, and voice she creates expansive sounds and songs, suitable for dance floor deep listening. Current projects include work with dancer Zoja Smutny on the concept album Rosé Porn, and with Ame Henderson and Matija Ferlin on their duet, Out of Season. She also performs with Jennifer Castle and Isla Craig in the vocal improvisational trio IC/JC/VC, and co-curates the Toronto label Healing Power Records with Wolfgang Nessel. She’ll also be providing visuals for herself and Pantayo.

Pantayo is an all-women gong ensemble based in Toronto whose music is grounded in the kulintang music traditions of Maguindanaoan & T’boli peoples of the Philippines, and influenced by their identities as Diasporic Filipinas. Select creative collaborations include Severed, video game soundtrack with YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN, and a performance with internationally acclaimed Filipina singer, Grace Nono.
