Wavelength Music and the Goethe-Institut Toronto are pleased to co-present the Toronto engagement of the new album tour by German prepared piano master – and Academy Award nominee – Hauschka a.k.a. Volker Bertelmann. Following his leap towards stardom with his Oscar nomination for Best Original Score for Lion (shared with Dustin O’Halloran), his 2017 album What If? (Temporary Residence Inc.) is another compelling collection of electronic-influenced, but entirely acoustically created, neo-classical works that defy description. Placing objects on the open strings of the piano in the tradition of John Cage, Hauschka playfully creates hypnotic, percussive moodscapes that recall everything from techno to indie folk, while maintaining a cinematic, instrumental sweep.

October 27’s concert will take place in the visually and acoustically gorgeous domed parish of St. Anne’s Anglican Church, on Gladstone Avenue north of Dundas in Toronto’s west end. A National Historic Site, the church’s architecture is based on the Hagia Sophia of Constantinople, and its interior famously features paintings by the Group of Seven, dating back to 1923. This will be a night not to be missed.

Supporting Hauschka will be Debashis Sinha. Driven by a deep commitment to the primacy of sound in his creative practice, Sinha has developed his artistic voice by weaving together his own experience as a second generation South Asian Canadian, his training with master drummers from various world music traditions, a love of electronic and electroacoustic music and technology, and a desire to transcend the traditional expectations of how these streams might intersect and interact. Sinha is one half of the electronic duo Knuckleduster along with noted Berlin musician Robert Lippok, also of post-rock band To Rococo Rot.

What the press are saying:

“Mesmerising” – The Guardian

“Astonishing” – Louder Than War

“Hauschka’s hauntological painting conjures up textured moodscapes and modernist collages. Inspired concept, superlative execution” – Uncut 8/10

“Piano, frenetic rhythms and spooky swathes of delay …formed of ghostly odes to fallen municipalities we humans have left behind…. so creepy you can hear the rats chewing through the wires” – NME
