Diar “دْيَار”

Diar—meaning “courtyard of a traditional home” in Damascene culture—symbolizes an open gathering place filled with memories of family, friendship, love, and heritage.

Founded in Toronto in 2018, Diar draws on the rich traditions of the Arab world, preserving their beauty while reimagining them for new audiences.

With a sound that blends deep-rooted Syrian and Arabic melodies with flamenco influences, Diar creates a bridge between past and present, Syria and its diaspora. Their repertoire spans traditional Arabic songs, Arabic Maqams, and original arrangements featuring the warm tones of the fretless guitar alongside the vibrant rhythms of the Cajon, Riq, Darbuka, and Frame drum. Since their debut, Diar has performed at major festivals and events, including Aga Khan Museum, Tirgan Festival, Happening Festival, Luminato Festival, Canada Day celebrations, Mayor’s Lunch for the Arts, and Sofar Sounds. Each performance offers a space where cultures meet, memories are kept alive, and music transcends borders. Rooted in the evocative meaning of “Diar,” the band honors memories of Damascus courtyards—known as Ard Diar (أرض دْيَار )—while embracing Canada as their new home. Their mission is to revive and celebrate Arabic heritage through accessible rhythms and heartfelt performance.
