JUNO-nominated artist Tara Kannangara makes music that feels expansive and deeply personal while resisting easy definition. From her early days in Chilliwack to forging her own path in Toronto after studying music at the University of Toronto, she has developed a songwriting style that explores what it means to move through the world as a dreamer and an outsider, learning when to trust her instincts while questioning the rules she was taught, and finding narrative and imagination at the heart of both her lyrics and live performances. Ahead of her return to the Wavelength stage, Kyle Sikorski spoke with Tara about how her classical and jazz training shapes her improvisation, how her relationship to vulnerability has evolved, and the ways she has changed as an artist since her first Wavelength show in 2019.
